Powers' Rankings: Week 13

Another record broken. The Irish get drunk and keep losing. The Rockets PR team finally get what they're looking for....

2017 EHCC All-Star Extravaganza Semi-Live Blog

Welcome welcome one and all to the annual EHCC All-Star Game Extravaganza! This year's festivities are being held in beautiful Rakeville, home of dong master Eric Thames, who was not named to the All-Star team. After all the hype surrounding how good he was, one has to wonder what he did to piss off the Rakeville brass to keep him from playing. Either way, follow along as I document the excitement in this semi-live blog, semi-live from Reed Field.

2017 EHCC All-Star Extravaganza Semi-Live Blog

Let's begin by introducing your 2017 EHCC All-Stars.

Anthony Rizzo gets forced behind the plate as he was the closest thing to a catcher the Western division was willing to put out there. Tijuana sends two first baseman, and Goldschmidt gets the starting nod over Bour. Plenty of talent in the western division outfield.

RPDUBGreg Holland
RPRIORoberto Osuno

We're going to have to wait and see on the pitching from the west. Kershaw, Santana, Sale, Bundy, and Grienke are all scheduled to go twice during the All-Star game, which may have been a factor in choosing some of them to represent theirs teams in Rakeville. Holland and Osuno lead the West in both overall ranking and Saves among relief pitchers, so their choices were pretty obvious and well deserved.

From the Eastern Division.....

SSLVDee Gordon
IFSJMark Reynolds
IFSFVMike Moustakas
OFBRWAaron Judge

OFRAKMiguel Sano
OFSFVMarcell Ozuna
UTILBRWJustin Smoak

The Eastern division also failed to send out a legitimate catcher this year, but luckily for them Bryce Harper has some experience and didn't mind putting on the pads once more. Dee Gordon gets the nod over slugger Adam Duvall out of Vegas strictly for the chance to steal some bases for the East (Gordon leads the east in the category and trails only Billy Hamilton overall). Daniel Murphy gets to play alongside rookie sensation, and trade partner Aaron Judge, but the surprise out of Bridgewater is free agent Justin Smoak getting the invite over dong-master Logan Morrison. The obvious snub here is Eric Thames, the hometown hero in Rakeville, who many though would have solidified his invite to the game over a month ago.

SPWEYMatt Scherzer

SPBRWAlex Wood
SPBRWJacob deGrom

SPSFVMichael Wacha
SPSFVLuis Severino
RPWEYCraig Kimbrel*
RPLVKenley Jansen*

Of all the starters, the East will only send out Lester, Leake, Odorizzi, and Pineda twice on the week, one less than the Western Division rotation. Kimbrel and Jansen lead the entire EHCC in overall rankings among relievers, but Jansen sits 6th in the East among Saves leaders and Kimbrel sits behind Fernando Rodney as well. Rodney's 4.91 ERA must have played a factor in the decision making process, but overall Jansen and Kimbrel just seem to be the most reliable overall at their position.

Let the games begin.....

Day 1: Monday, June 19, 2017

Even with 2 less hitters going in the first day, the eastern Division All-Stars more than made up for it at the plate. Justin Smoak and Bryce Harper led the charge with a dong a piece, while Dee Gordon did what he was brought on to do: steal bases. Kris Bryant was the only member of the eastern squad that failed to get at least 1 hit on the day.

The western bats kept pace with their power bats, with Justin Bour and George Springer both going yard. The concern for day one was that the western division line up only mustered up 9 hits on the day (compared to 12 by the East).

Clayton Kershaw started things off for the west and even though he let up 6 runs through 6 and a third, he still racked up 10 K's and the W. Dylan Bundy wasn't so lucky, only lasting 4 and a third and giving up the same amount of runs but only collecting 2 K's. Roberto Osuna got three straight outs to claim the day's only save.

Over in the East, their pitchers faired a bit better, but didn't recevie enough run support to garner any stats in the W column. Jake Odorizzi and Jon Lester combined for 13 innings and 5 ER and 11 K, but neither of them could grab a W on the day.

After day 1, the east takes a slight lead lead by their bats.

Players of the Day:
East: Justin Smoak (3/4, 2 R, HR, RBI)
West: Justin Bour (2/4, R, HR, 4 RBI)

Day 2: Tuesday, June 20, 2017

The hits just keep on coming, especially in the East. Both teams collected 14 hits a piece on Tuesday, but the East squad did it with 4 less at bats. Hometown hero Miguel Sano and Weymouth's Daniel Murphy led the charge with a home run a piece and 5 total RBI. The west bats kept pace, but couldn't do enough to close the gap early on. All three home runs by the west were solo shots, but they still collected more RBI than the east today (13-12).

The East's pitching was dominant, but couldn't catch a break in the W department. Michael Pineda and Mike Leake combined for 13 IP and just 3 ER, but neither could put up the W. Where as the Western Division starters were less than dominant (20.2 IP, 25 H+BB, 13 ER) but still collected two Wins. Greg Holland tacked on a save for good measure as well.

Players of the Day
East: Miguel Sano (2/4, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI)
West: Chris Sale (8.1 IP, W, 10 K, 3.24 ERA, 0.60 WHIP)

Day 3: Wednesday, June 21, 2017

They don;t hot often, but when the Western Division bats do connect there seems to be men on base to hit in. Once again both the west and east collected the same amount of hits (10), and once again the East did it with 4 less at bats. But the difference here was opportunity. The west knocked in 11 RBI to the East's 5, giving them the category for the time being. Led by Francisco Lindor's 3-run bomb, the Western all-stars tried making a name for themselves with their bats.

Unfortunately though they only sent out one pitcher on the day, and he (Roberto Osuna) only went one inning for the Save. All the while the Weymouth pitching all-stars (Matt Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco) combined for 14 IP and 21 K's, giving the East one more category in their cap.

Players of the Day
East: Carlos Carrasco (6 IP, W, 10 K, 0.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP)
West: Francisco Lindor (2/5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI)

Day 4: Thursday, June 22, 2017

We're halfway through the match up, and the Western bats finally started to hit. Unfortunately for them, the East didn't stop hitting as a result. Led by Charlie Blackmon and Paul Goldschmidt, the west recorded 10 hits on just 27 at bats, raising the team average over twenty points on the week. Kris Bryant and company answered back with exactly one more R, HR, and RBI than their western counterparts on the night (7, 3, 7 vs 6, 2, 6 respectively).

The Western Division pitching staff didn't do their offense any favors either. Ivan Nova was knocked around for 13 H+BB and 4 ER in his 7 innings of work, while Carlos Martinez put up a respectable 6 innings with just 3 ER. Marcus Stroman really twisted the dagger though, only lasting 4 innings and giving up 7 ER and 9 H+BB in that short time. The East was quiet, only putting out one starter (Luis Severino), who let up 10 H+BB and 5 ER in 6 innings. Kenley Jansen got the coveted 4 out save for the East to close it out.

Elon Musk refused to donate a Tesla to the game since he wasn't allowed to play. Aaron was the only player during the week to hit 3 home runs, and helped lead the eastern Division to victory.
